A tour of Hime should have only taken half a day at the most. But Paul had a lot of questions about Hime and Toyama Prefecture, and even by his third day, he was still asking questions nonstop. His questions weren’t only about the fishery, but also about the city itself and the people who lived here.

“What’s Toyoma famous for?” Paul asked as we sat in his hotel room, drinking coffee.

“Well, they produce the most tulips in all of Japan. Also, the home ownership rate is the highest in Japan. They also have the highest female employment rate.”

Then, I bragged about the Hime Udon noodle being one of the most recognizable noodles in Japan and Hime’s unique black ramen noodle. I also quickly listed some of our other accomplishments: the highest household spending on education, one of the three biggest Buddha statues in Japan, an old Buddhist temple and a garden that were called national treasures, and ski lessons in the winter time at the school.

“Wow, I’m impressed. I think you even said that all in one breath.”

I laughed. In front of Paul, my memory skill seemed to work even better than usual.

“I have more stats, like the number of public bath houses per capita is the highest in Japan, and Hime is the only place in Japan that serves real crab in their school lunch, and—” Before I could list any more, Paul stopped me by kissing me again. I kissed him back, and then we both stood up and slowly walked back toward the bed.

“Is this all right?” Paul asked.

I nodded and turned off the lights.
